On April 1, South Albany High School caught fire. The fire destroyed the Cafeteria and the Music Department. The choral program lost many years’ worth of sheet music. The Cascade Chorus has donated $500 toward replacing the sheet music for South Albany’s choir. We also donated music books.
From Cascade Chorus President, Vic Fitzpatrick: "I delivered two boxes of music books to a very appreciative music teacher at South Albany High School April 30th. His name is Brett DeYoung and said they used to have these books...but they were lost along with everything else in the fire. He told me they were in use all the time and wasn't sure where to go to get them replaced and could not thank me enough. He hopes that they can hear us sing one day.
He also mentioned that they are in final negotiations with the insurance company and are busy planning for the new building now. They are on target to have the building completed in seven months. I took a picture of the building that was involved in the fire. The picture doesn’t show much of the damage, however it’s located about 20 feet from the main school building separated by a breezeway. (That picture was not sent for publication.) I could not believe how close they came from having the entire school involved. Amazing work by the fire department to contain the fire."
The Cascade Chorus is not only passionate about music in our own lives, but in the lives of the next generation and our community.
